The Magic of a Snow Day

Today was supposed to be a travel day. The plan was to pack up, hit the road, and head home. But life—much like the weather—has a way of shifting our plans. We woke up to fresh snow and blizzard conditions through the pass, making it clear that today wasn’t meant for traveling. So, instead, we stayed.

And honestly? It turned into the coziest, most wonderful kind of unexpected day.

There’s something magical about snow. Gilmore Girls’ Lorelai Gilmore gets it—she says that snow is like “pure magic,” and I couldn’t agree more. Snow has this way of transforming everything, turning even the most familiar places into something new and breathtaking. It hushes the world, slows us down, and invites us to pause. And sometimes, that pause is exactly what we need.

So rather than braving the roads, we leaned into the moment. We snuggled in and enjoyed Mountain Mike’s pizza (a personal favorite that I don’t get at home!), which made the unexpected delay even sweeter. We spent the day at Caleb and Kassidy’s, soaking up time with my favorite grandpup, Billie. There’s something about being surrounded by warmth and loved ones on a snowy day that makes the world feel a little softer, a little kinder.

It made me think about how often in life, we get frustrated when our plans don’t go the way we expect. We want to move forward, check things off our lists, and stay on schedule. But sometimes, God has a different plan. Sometimes, He sends a snowstorm—not to inconvenience us, but to remind us to slow down, to be still, and to trust Him.

One of my favorite scriptures comes to mind:

“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10

Maybe today was just a snow day, or maybe it was a gentle reminder that sometimes the most beautiful moments come when we let go of control and simply trust.

So, whether today was filled with sledding, warm blankets, unexpected detours, or quiet moments of reflection, I hope you find a little joy in the pause. And if you’re like me, you might just be hoping for another magical snowfall soon.

Melissa! You are a beautiful writer! I had a similar experience yesterday and was reminded that there are things of eternal importance and then there are just “things.” I can get so buried in all the many tasks I need to get done for work and home that I have to have that re-set button to be reminded to, “slow down, to be still, and to trust Him” like you said! There is great solace and peace that comes from being STILL and when we put our trust back in our Savior, Jesus Christ, everything quickly comes back into balance.
