Every family has their version of a perfect day. Sometimes it might be a beach vacation, other times a trip to Disney. Yesterday it was Chili’s, shoe shopping, and a movie. And honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
We started at Crash’s favorite restaurant—Chili’s. Now, when I say favorite, I mean this kid could write a dissertation on the Triple Dipper. He has it memorized, perfected, and celebrated. Watching him order was like watching a master at work. He didn’t even need the menu. Shawn and I just sat there smiling because honestly, when you’re twelve and you’ve found something you love that much, it’s worth cheering for. (If only broccoli got him this excited!)
After we successfully fueled him up, it was time for the dreaded errand: shoe shopping. Crash has been in desperate need of new church shoes because, apparently, his feet have signed a secret growth contract with Godzilla. Every time I blink, they’ve gone up another size. I truly believe that his big feet are a sign he’s destined for greatness. Honestly, with the size of those shoes, he may stomp right into greatness without even trying.
And because every great day needs dessert, we wrapped things up with a movie of Crash’s choice and a tub of popcorn. Of course, we all pretended to “share” the popcorn, but let’s be real—Crash claimed it faster than Shawn claims the TV remote. Still, sitting there together, laughing at the movie, sneaking extra handfuls of buttery goodness, it felt like exactly what our family needed.
Here’s the truth: it wasn’t about the food, the shoes, or even the movie. It was about time. Time with no phones buzzing, no distractions pulling us in a hundred directions, no worries about what tomorrow might bring. Just Shawn, Crash, and me—talking, laughing, teasing, and enjoying being together.
And in that simple day, I felt something sacred. The scriptures remind us, “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). I think family time can be one of those sacred gatherings. It doesn’t always look like scripture study around the table or a formal family home evening. Sometimes it looks like Chili’s, Godzilla feet, and buttery popcorn. Because the Spirit can be felt in laughter, in love, and in those quiet moments when we remember what matters most.
Sometimes the best memories aren’t made on vacations or in big, expensive moments. They’re made on a simple Saturday when you say, “Let’s just be together.” And when we choose that—connection over distraction—we’re not just building memories, we’re building eternity.
A Super Saturday—Chili’s style, Godzilla feet and all. ❤️
