Itās finally FRIDAY! š That magical day where I convince myself Iāll finally catch up on sleep⦠only to stay up way too late mentally preparing for Crashās basketball tournament this weekend.
Letās be realāIām not just a casual spectator. I am an unpaid, highly dedicated, fully invested, loud-and-proud basketball mom.
I know some parents like to sit back quietly, giving the occasional polite clap. That is not me. Iām in the front row (or as close as I can get), on my feet, living and breathing every play like Iām the one out there running drills. And yes, I know my kid is probably pretending not to know me when I get extra excited, but heyāthatās just part of the job.
Meanwhile, while Crash is putting in the workāpracticing his shots, running plays in his head, getting his game face onāIām over here preparing in my own way:
š Practicing my āThatās MY kid!!ā celebration pose in the mirror.
š§ Reviewing the unspoken parent code of conduct and reminding myself that I am, in fact, a grown adult who should not yell at the referees.
š«£ Setting personal goals to cheer loudly without embarrassing my child too much (spoiler: I will absolutely embarrass him).
š¤ Warming up my vocal cords because I will absolutely be losing my voice by halftime.
And letās not forget the essential basketball mom checklist:
āļø Lucky “Basketball MOM” Tee shirt washed and ready (because, obviously, this affects performance).
āļø Emergency snacks packedābecause cheering is basically a sport, and I need fuel.
āļø A firm self-reminder that not every call requires my expert sideline opinion⦠probably.
āļø A mental note to try and not ācoachā from the bleachersāagain, probably.
But in all seriousness, watching my boys participate in sports is one of my absolute favorite things in the world. Thereās nothing like seeing your kid work hard, push through challenges, and light up when they make a great play. The hustle, the teamwork, the determinationāitās all worth the sore throat Iāll have by Sunday. š
And letās talk about post-game celebrations. Win or lose, you know weāre stopping somewhere for food because basketball burns calories, and so does screaming like a maniac from the stands.
So if you see me at the game tomorrow, just know:
āļø I will be loud.
āļø I might get a little too into it.
āļø I definitely will be the first one jumping up when Crash makes a big play.
And if youāre one of those quiet, composed parents who watches calmly and politely clapsājust know I admire your self-control, but I cannot relate. š
Who else takes their kidās sports games way too seriously? š Letās form a support groupācomplete with matching T-shirts and post-game snacks.
